I’m a writer, so my work setup is…particular. I need a big screen, a comfortable keyboard, and a quiet space. I also need to be able to move it all around. So when I heard about the iPhone Duo—a combination of an iPhone and a portable keyboard and kickstand—I was intrigued. Could I actually get work done using just an iPhone?
The Setup
The iPhone Duo consists of an iPhone 14 Pro (or Pro Max) and a keyboard and kickstand combo. The keyboard is a full-size keyboard with a trackpad, and the kickstand is adjustable so you can get the right viewing angle. The whole setup is surprisingly compact and lightweight.
I set up the iPhone Duo on my desk and started working. The first thing I noticed was how comfortable the keyboard was to type on. It’s not quite as comfortable as my mechanical keyboard, but it’s definitely good enough for long typing sessions.
The kickstand also worked well. It held the iPhone at a good viewing angle, and it was stable enough that it didn’t wobble around when I was typing.
The Software
The biggest challenge with the iPhone Duo is the software. iOS is not designed for desktop-style multitasking. You can only have one app open at a time, and switching between apps is not as easy as it is on a laptop or desktop computer.
I found myself constantly switching between apps, which was frustrating. I also missed having a proper file system. iOS’s file system is not as intuitive as macOS or Windows, and it was difficult to find the files I needed.
I also ran into some compatibility issues. Some websites didn’t render correctly on the iPhone, and some apps didn’t work at all.
The Experience
Despite the software limitations, I was able to get a surprising amount of work done with the iPhone Duo. I wrote articles, edited photos, and even did some coding.
The biggest benefit of the iPhone Duo is its portability. I was able to take my work with me wherever I went. I worked on the train, in a coffee shop, and even in a park.
The iPhone Duo is also a good option for people who need a backup workstation. If your laptop breaks down, or if you’re traveling and don’t have access to a computer, the iPhone Duo can be a lifesaver.
The Downsides
The iPhone Duo is not perfect. The software limitations are significant, and the lack of a proper file system can be frustrating. The price is also a factor. The iPhone 14 Pro and the keyboard and kickstand combo can cost over $1,500.
The Verdict
The iPhone Duo is a viable emergency workstation. It’s portable, comfortable, and surprisingly powerful. However, it’s not a replacement for a laptop or desktop computer. If you need a backup workstation, or if you travel a lot, the iPhone Duo is a good option. But if you’re looking for a full-featured desktop replacement, you’ll be disappointed.
