Meta Platforms Inc. shares were up 2.8% in premarket trading Wednesday after the company reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue, and issued a strong forecast.
But the biggest takeaway from Meta’s earnings call might be what wasn’t said — or rather, what was hinted at. Meta executives didn’t offer much in the way of specific guidance for AI spending in 2024, but they did say they expect to continue investing heavily in the technology.
“We should expect continued investment in AI,” Meta Chief Financial Officer Susan Li said on the earnings call. “We’re going to continue to invest in AI infrastructure, and we’re going to continue to invest in AI research and development.”
That’s not necessarily surprising, given that Meta is competing with other tech giants like Google and Microsoft in the race to develop and deploy AI technologies. But it does suggest that AI spending could be higher than previously anticipated.

Analysts at KeyBanc Capital Markets noted that Meta’s capital expenditure guidance for 2024 was light, but that the company’s AI investments could be higher than expected.
“Meta’s capex guidance appears conservative, and we believe AI investments could be higher than previously anticipated,” the analysts wrote in a note to clients. “We believe Meta is likely to be the first major tech company this earnings season to foreshadow higher-than-expected AI costs for next year.”
That could be a sign that other tech companies will also need to increase their AI spending in the coming months, as the competition for AI talent and infrastructure intensifies.
“The AI arms race is on, and Meta is clearly a major player,” said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter. “The company is investing heavily in AI, and it’s likely that other tech companies will need to do the same in order to stay competitive.”
