The $159 GamerCard is a pocket-size retro handheld that aims to deliver a classic gaming experience. It’s a neat idea, and the device has a lot going for it—especially its gorgeous 4.3-inch screen. But the GamerCard is ultimately undone by its awful controls and awkward software.

A Beautiful Screen, a Terrible D-Pad

The GamerCard’s biggest strength is its screen. It’s a vibrant, 800x480 IPS display that looks fantastic. Colors pop, and the viewing angles are wide. It’s a joy to look at, and it makes retro games look their best.

Unfortunately, the rest of the device doesn’t live up to the screen. The controls are terrible. The D-pad is mushy and unresponsive, and the face buttons feel cheap and clicky. It’s difficult to pull off precise movements in games that require quick reflexes.

The shoulder buttons are also a problem. They’re small and difficult to press, and they don’t have a lot of travel. This makes them uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time.

Awkward Software

The GamerCard runs on a custom operating system called GamerOS. It’s based on RetroPie, but it’s been heavily modified. The interface is clunky and unintuitive, and it’s difficult to find the games you want to play.

The software also has a lot of bugs. I experienced frequent crashes and glitches, and the device sometimes froze up completely. It’s clear that GamerOS needs a lot more polish before it’s ready for prime time.

A Promising Idea, Poorly Executed

The GamerCard is a promising idea, but it’s poorly executed. The screen is fantastic, but the controls are terrible and the software is buggy. If you’re looking for a retro handheld, there are better options available.

Bottom Line: The GamerCard is a flawed device that doesn’t live up to its potential. It’s a shame, because the screen is really good. But the awful controls and awkward software make it difficult to recommend.
