The Breville Eye Q ($300) is a four-slice toaster that aims to take the guesswork out of making toast. It uses optical sensors to detect the color of your bread and adjust the toasting time accordingly. It’s a clever idea, and in some ways, it works. But after weeks of testing, I found that the Eye Q often produced unevenly toasted bread, and its fancy features didn’t always justify its high price.
Design and Features
The Eye Q has a sleek, stainless-steel design that will look good on any countertop. It has four wide slots that can accommodate everything from bagels to thick slices of bread. The controls are simple and intuitive, with a dial for selecting the desired level of darkness and buttons for various toasting modes, such as bagel, defrost, and lift and look.
The Eye Q’s most notable feature is its optical sensors. These sensors measure the color of your bread as it’s toasting and adjust the toasting time accordingly. Breville claims that this technology ensures that your toast is always perfectly browned. However, in my testing, I found that the sensors weren’t always accurate. Sometimes, the Eye Q would stop toasting before the bread was fully browned, while other times, it would continue toasting until the bread was burnt.
Performance
I tested the Eye Q with a variety of breads, including white bread, wheat bread, bagels, and English muffins. In general, the Eye Q produced unevenly toasted bread. The edges of the toast were often darker than the center, and some slices were more browned than others.
I also found that the Eye Q’s toasting modes weren’t always effective. The bagel mode, for example, didn’t always toast the cut side of the bagel evenly. And the defrost mode didn’t always thaw the bread completely before toasting it.
The Good
- Sleek design
- Wide slots
- Intuitive controls
- Optical sensors
The Bad
- Uneven toasting
- Inaccurate sensors
- Expensive
The Bottom Line
The Breville Eye Q is a well-designed toaster with some clever features. However, its uneven toasting and inaccurate sensors make it difficult to recommend, especially at its high price. If you’re looking for a toaster that consistently produces perfectly browned toast, you’re better off with a simpler model.
