Ahead of the Kindle’s 20th anniversary next year, Amazon is refreshing its entire range of e-readers with fresh colors, an aluminum build, and a new frame design that’s both thinner and lighter.
The new Kindles—including a standard model, Paperwhite, and the premium Colorsoft—will ship starting in October. The standard Kindle gets a bump to a 6-inch, 300-ppi display, and the Paperwhite jumps to a 6.8-inch, 300-ppi screen. Both get a flush-front design, meaning the screen is level with the bezel.
The Colorsoft, which Amazon is positioning as a premium option, has a 7-inch, 300-ppi E Ink Kaleido 3 display. This is the same screen tech that’s in the Kobo Libra Colour, and it’s capable of displaying up to 50 shades of color. Amazon says the Colorsoft is aimed at manga readers and textbook users.
All three devices have USB-C charging, and Amazon claims the new Kindles will have improved battery life. The standard Kindle will get 10 weeks of battery life, while the Paperwhite and Colorsoft will get up to 10 weeks as well.
Amazon is also introducing a new 300-ppi display on the standard Kindle, which is a significant upgrade from the 167-ppi display on the previous model. The Paperwhite also gets a bump to a 300-ppi display, and both devices have a flush-front design, which means the screen is level with the bezel.
The Colorsoft is the most significant upgrade of the three devices. It has a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 display that can display up to 50 shades of color. Amazon says the Colorsoft is aimed at manga readers and textbook users.
The new Kindles will ship starting in October. The standard Kindle will start at $99, the Paperwhite will start at $139, and the Colorsoft will start at $249.
