I spent a long day in the video game slop mines, and I have to say, the results were… not great. I was trying out Google’s AI Playground, a new tool that lets you experiment with the company’s large language models (LLMs) to generate text, code, and more. One of the things you can do with it is create simple text-based games.
And so I did. I asked the AI to make a game about a detective solving a murder. It came up with a story that was convoluted and nonsensical, with characters who had no clear motivations. The puzzles were arbitrary and the ending was a complete cop-out.
I tried again, this time asking for a game about a space explorer discovering a new planet. The AI generated a world that was bland and uninspired, with no sense of wonder or danger. The gameplay consisted of little more than walking around and collecting rocks.
I kept trying, hoping to coax something interesting out of the AI. But every time, the results were the same: games that were boring, confusing, and ultimately unsatisfying. It was like the AI had no understanding of what makes a game fun.
Of course, it’s important to remember that these are still early days for AI-powered game development. The technology is still in its infancy, and it’s likely to improve over time. But for now, it seems that humans still have a significant edge when it comes to creating compelling interactive experiences.
“It’s not that the AI is bad at generating text,” says Lilian Weng, a research scientist at Google who is working on the AI Playground. “It’s just that it doesn’t understand what a game is. It doesn’t understand the concept of fun.”
Weng says that one of the challenges is that games require a lot of complex reasoning and planning. The AI needs to be able to anticipate the player’s actions and respond in a way that is both logical and engaging. It also needs to be able to create a world that is believable and immersive.
“These are all things that humans are very good at,” Weng says. “But they are very difficult for AI to replicate.”
So, what does this mean for the future of game development? Will AI eventually be able to create games that are as good as, or even better than, those made by humans? It’s hard to say. But for now, it seems that the best way to make a great game is still to rely on the creativity and skill of human developers.
