Five years after the comedian went viral with a 12-hour blabberthon mocking the king of bro podcasting, he’s back in character to shill a supplement called “Crab Salts.”
Tim Heidecker, one half of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, first unleashed his character Dr. Steve Brule—a deeply unqualified and aggressively confident medical “expert”—on the world in 2017 with Onion Vision, a 12-hour livestream that parodied the long-form, often rambling conversations of Joe Rogan. Now, Brule is back, and he’s got a product to sell.
Heidecker is bringing The Steve Brule Show to The Onion this month, a series of short videos where Brule hawks “Crab Salts,” a dietary supplement he claims will cure everything from erectile dysfunction to seasonal allergies. (It will not.)
“I’ve been studying the crab for 30 years,” Brule says in one video, while holding up a jar of what appears to be brownish powder. “The crab is a miracle. It’s a pharmacy. It’s a doctor. It’s a friend.”
The videos, which are directed by Heidecker and produced by his company, Heidecker & Co., are a pitch-perfect satire of the wellness industry and the often-dubious claims made by influencers and supplement companies. They’re also a continuation of Heidecker’s long-running exploration of the absurdity of American culture.
“I think people are really craving authenticity right now,” Heidecker said in an interview. “And Dr. Steve Brule is as authentic as it gets. He’s a complete fraud, but he’s a lovable fraud.”
The Steve Brule Show will premiere on The Onion’s YouTube channel on October 26.
